SUMMARY:Pack the County Chambers to Stop Data Centers in Durham
DESCRIPTION:Turn out to 200 E. Main St to demand our county commissioners pass a strong\, loophole free countywide data center moratorium! Together we can protect all of us and our ecosystems. \nJOIN THE RALLY AT 6PM! We’ll have bold community speakers\, food and mutual aid supplies with The People’s Table / @bullcityvanguard\, and more! \nIf you are joining virtually on 8/24 to give public comment\, submit your full name and address to the Clerk via email or phone: clerk@dconc.gov or (919-560-0025) BEFORE SUNDAY 8/23 AT 2PM! \nSome commissioners want to allow 100\,000 sq ft data centers for their corporate tech “stakeholders”\, which defeats the entire purpose of a moratorium–to give us vital protections while we determine the best approach to permanent protections. This loophole would allow data centers that use up to 100 MW\, enough energy to power 80-100K homes. Supporters include Commissioner Wendy Jacobs and Chair Mike Lee who happens to work for Avalara\, an agentic AI company\, and has admitted that he depends on data centers for his living. Chair Lee has a clear conflict of interest but is refusing to recuse himself! Also\, that’s hyperscale!! Along with huge amounts of energy\, data centers also use huge amounts of water\, and they add more carcinogenic toxins into our air\, soils\, and watersheds. Even “small scale” ones have a big impact and must be strictly regulated! \nPeople\, our plant and animal kin\, and the planet over dirty\, deadly AI data centers! \nSpread the word\, sign the petition\, send letters to your commissioners\, and join us to protect ALL OF US and our shared ecosystems from tech vultures and the politicians enabling them! \nDetails\, links to the petition and letter drafts\, and more info from the Stop Data Centers In Durham Coalition can be found here:\nwww.communitylandandpower.org/stop-data-centers

SUMMARY:Defending Our Elections: Planning for Public Witness
DESCRIPTION:Following the passage of new anti-immigrant laws\, an escalation by ICE in the Pisgah National Forest and new threats to the sanctity of this fall’s election\, all enabled by white Christian nationalists\, join clergy across the state to learn how to participate in powerful public Christian public witness that centers the Matthew 25 values of “love your neighbor as yourself” and protects the right to select our leaders through elections. \nThe Republican-controlled State Board of Elections has approved a string of party-line rule changes ahead of the midterms\, letting county boards reject reasonable-impediment voter-ID ballots by a simple majority\, toss absentee ballots over envelope “irregularities\,” and remove people from polling places more easily. And the board voted 3–2 to use DHS’s SAVE immigration database to flag and remove suspected noncitizens from the rolls — a system experts warn wrongly flags eligible citizens. We must take action to protect the integrity of our elections\, in part because conservative Christians in our state have advanced a “voter fraud”\, “election integrity” narrative for years\, which has enabled today’s threats to the democratic process.
